  • Plano Firefighters Association: Why We're Pushing for the 48/96 Schedule

In January 2022, Plano Fire Rescue (PFR) began exploring the 48/96 shift schedule—a topic that’s been a hot discussion point for our members since 2020. As more Metroplex departments adopt this schedule, we’ve seen a drop in applicants and a rise in entrance exams, signaling the need for change.

The question we’re asking: Is the 48/96 schedule a good fit for Plano Fire Rescue? After months of research, meetings, and feedback from City Management, we’ve identified key factors to consider, from emergency call volume to budget impact. Our findings suggest that a trial program could lead to healthier firefighters, improved family time, and no negative impact on patient care.

Our recommendation? A one-year pilot program to give the 48/96 schedule a fair shot, with the full backing of our Executive Team and medical experts. It's time for a shift that works for both our team and the citizens we serve.

Attached is the Plano Fire-Rescue 'White Paper' that was submitted to City Management.
